You've got skills, they're multiplying

: Amy Sweeting

To work in fundraising requires a special kind of person. You’ve already got so many incredible skills; commitment, communication, creativity, the ability to build and maintain a relationship. But even the best fundraisers need to stretch their comfort zone sometimes.

The charity world is full of innovative and forward-thinking individuals, which is fantastic news for the causes we all work tirelessly to support, but it also means that you need to learn the skills to confidently take on bigger and bolder activities to stay at the top of the game.

Fundraising Convention enables you to learn new skills and shows you how to use them in your role as a fundraiser. Over the three days in July, speakers and volunteers will support you to build your confidence and increase your ability to fundraise in an innovative and successful way. The speakers for Convention 2017 will include over 200 experts, ready to share their insight into a multitude of disciplines across the sector. It is no secret that this has been a tough year for fundraisers, but I am looking forward to hearing the latest developments and trends. This year it is vital that we all come together to reflect, teach and challenge each other so that we are being the best fundraisers we can be.

Having attended Convention for the last five years, I have come away every year feeling inspired and ready to tackle any challenges, bursting with motivation and with a notepad full of creative ideas. It is with these ideas and skills that I have got to where I am today. I still have a diagram pinned up above my desk that I scribbled down at Convention a few years ago, reminding me every day to start with ‘why’. It is so important to communicate to donors not only about what we are doing, but why we are doing it - I now ask myself why before I do anything; Why am I approaching this prospect? Why would they be inspired by this project? Why would they give that amount? That’s what I find most inspiring about Convention; in a world full of so many questions, it sure is nice to get some answers!
