The Children's Society

Convention Board Chair

Joe leads The Children’s Society’s fundraising and supporter engagement teams, involving as many people as possible in helping build a country where children are free from disadvantage. This involves developing strong relationships with people, groups and organisations inspired by their vision.

1. What do you like most about being on the board?

Our Fundraising Convention is the biggest, most diverse event of its kind in Europe – it’s a fantastic challenge!  To create content that will be relevant at every level, whether you’re at the start of your career or a seasoned professional; working for large, medium or small charities; from every possible background working across so many different strategies, techniques and disciplines, offering best practice from the past and thought leadership for the future. Which results in lively debates on the board as we seek to create a coherent programme that can thrive on the clash of ideas and experiences.

2. What do you bring to the board?

As Chair, it’s my job to firstly help ensure we’re clear on the aims and objectives for Fundraising Convention, and secondly to harness the collective talents and experiences of all the amazing volunteers that make the event possible to achieve those aims, from the Board members to the speakers to those helping out during the actual week. All powered by the fab IoF staff team.  I hope I bring to that task my experience as a leader in our sector, particularly in understanding the value of Convention and why we play such a critical role in raising the charity bar while also offering three days of excellent fun!

3. What are you looking forward to about this year’s Fundraising Convention?

This year will be all about leadership at every level – at a time when there’s so much change and disruption in our sector, it’s timely to explore how we all have the opportunity to lead our organisations to achieve our mission. There will be some inspiring plenary sessions, fantastic speakers in every track and lots of opportunities in the sidelines to network and make new connections. For me, it’s the latter that I always look forward to the most – catching up with old friends, making new ones and taking some time out from the day-to-day to rejuvenate!
